Maalipurkit kun taas aukesivat, piti keksiä paljon hyviä kohteita käyttää sitä. 

When the paint cans were opened again, it was good to have a few projects to use them on. 

Pitkään suunnitteilla ollut projekti maalatuista puuhenkareista sai vauhtia. Ei aikaakaan ja eteisestä ei tylsiä henkareita löydy!

Finally got started on the hangers-project. Not too long and there'll be no plain ones left!

Maalipistooli - Paint gun

Hankimme keväällä maalipistoolin, mutta se on odottanut kiltisti käyttöönottoa varastossa. Oikeasti aseistus hankittiin terassin öljyämiseen ja lautaverhoilujen maalaamiseen, mutta mies ei enää kestänyt jännitystä, vaan halusi kokeilla sitä.

We bought a paint gun on the spring but it has just been sitting and waiting for someone to use it. The real purpose we bought it for was the deck and the wood trim on the house, but the husband could not wait any longer and wanted to try it out.

Annoin tietenkin käyttöön miehekkäimmän maalivaihtoehdon ;)

I of course let him use the most masculine of the paints available ;)

Jotain niin herkkää on tässä kuvassa: parantelemassa jälkeä sudilla. Koekäytön jälkeen voi todeta, että soveltunee juuri niille kohteille, joita alunperin sillä suunnittelimme tekevämme. Maalia taitaa mennä aika lailla hukkaan näin pienissä projekteissa ja peittävyyttä on vaikea saavuttaamonimutkaisemmissa kohteissa (tummasta vaaleaksi, tuolin jalat jne). Ehkä toimisi paremmin, mikäli ensin vetäisi peittokerroksen muilla keinoin ja sitten viimeistelypinnan pistoolilla (mm. istuinosa tulisi varmasti siististi siten).

Fixing the result. Having tried the gun on the smaller items we had to agree that it probably will be better on the original targets we had in mind. These smaller projects might have too high losses on the paint and it is difficult to get proper coverage (from dark to light; the chair legs). Maybe it would be better to first paint the coat that covers using a brush and then finishing it with a sprayed surface (the seat of the chair would probably get a nice even surface).

Hämeen keskiaikamarkkinat - Häme Medieval Fair

Hämeenlinnassa on viikonlopun (17.-19.8.2012) ajan Hämeen keskiaikamarkkinat Linnanpuistossa. Perjantaina markkinoille oli vapaa pääsy.

The Medieval Fair is on this weekend (17-19 August 2012) in Linnanpuisto Park, Hämeenlinna, Finland featuring "culture and lifestyle from the Middle Ages: music, horse tournaments and combat acts, craftsmen, magicians, merchants etc".

Kesälomailun satoa, vol. 2 - Fruits of my Un-Labour, vol. 2

Kesälomalla on kyllä ehtinyt kierrellä mm. kirppiksillä aivan uskottavasti. Ja onhan sieltä matkaankin lähtenyt. Esimerkiksi jälleen yksi kokoelmaan lisättävä kynttilänjalka. Tällä oli lakkakerros, joten sitä piti ensin vähän hioa ennen maalikerrosta, joka tällä kertaa on spray-pullosta. Voi kyllä olla, että täytyy lisätä vielä sudilla pintaan jokin maali, koska tämä ei näytä ihan tasaiselta hiontapinnasta johtuen. Pienessä pärekorissa tuo samainen maalipinta näytti kyllä oikein hyvältä. 

During the summer holiday I've had plenty of opportunities to go round flea markets. And found something too. For example, here is another candle stick for my impressive collection. This one had to be sanded as it had a varnish but unfortunately the 2 coats of spray paint did not seem to be enough for a smooth surface so we may need to use a brush on it. The little basket looked alright with that same spray paint on. 

Juomakori sai pintaansa uuden värin ja vain odottaa tilaisuutta päästä käyttöön!

The wooden box meant for carrying bottles got spray painted and is now eagerly waiting for something to carry.

Kesälomailun satoa, vol. 1 - Fruits of my Un-Labour, vol.1

Kesälomailu on kyllä vaikuttanut blogikirjoitustahtiin, ei voi mitään. Etukäteen miettimäni "teen sitten etukäteen" jäi sekin tekemättä. Kesälomailun lisäksi jokin muukin on vaikuttanut puutarhavelvollisuuksien laiminlyöntiin, mutta onneksi on jotain, jotka vain kiltisti kasvavat ilman jokailtaista kasville-puhumissessiota. Sileälehtinen persilja on kyllä yksi niistä, mutta sitä voisi kasvattaa jotain muutakin kuin kukkia. Onhan persiljan kukatkin kauniita, mutta ei ehkä se varsinainen syy, miksi niitä kasvattaa. Laventelin sen sijaan olenkin hankkinut juuri kukkien vuoksi, joten se toteuttaa tehtäväänsä toivotunlaisesti.

Being on holiday has affected the blogging, there's no denying it. I had thought I'd write some posts beforehand but never mind that. Neglecting the gardening must have some other excuses also, but luckily there are some that grow without me trying to grow them. The parsley crop should be something other than flowers, but at least they are pretty! The lavender however is fulfilling it's mission in life with all those flowers, that's what I've bought it for!

Ensimmäiset omat omenat on jo testailtu, mutta annetaan niiden vielä vähän kasvaa. Niitä onkin nyt enemmän kuin koskaan historiassa (historia tuntee huikeita 8 omenan satoja)

We tasted the first of the apples, but I think we'll let them grow a little more and let them amount to a historic apple crop (the previous record is something like 8 apples)

Perunatkin ovat onneksi kasvattaneet jotain muuta kuin kukkia ja ensimmäinen oma peruna-kattilallinen on nyt keitetty ja nam. Perunoista alkaa varret kuolla lakastua, joten ilmeisesti täytyy käyttää koko sato pikaisesti.

The first potatoes were cooked the other night and were yummy. However, the plants seem to be dying so I think we need to rush and eat them. 

Nythän voinkin ottaa perunasadon talteen tähän hienoon kirpparilöytöön, nuohan saattaisivat jopa riittää peittämään laatikon pohjan ;)

And I can use this lovely find for carrying them into the house. I'm sure the potatoes will cover the bottom of the box ;)

Vedinkö? - New Hardware

Joku voi muistaa lipastomuutoksen keväältä, jolloin maalasin kauniin pyökkisen kenkälipaston. Silloin ongelmaksi muodostui vetimet. Oikeanlaisia ei tahtonut löytää, ylimpiin laatikoihin sain A- ja B-vetimet, mutta niille oikeanlaiset kaverit oli vaikea löytää. En ollut tyytyväinen löytämiini, joten nyt reissusta kun löysin 1-6 nupit, nuo lähtivät enempiä miettimättä matkaan. Kuvassa vielä vanha A-nuppi paikoillaan kun muut on vaihdettu.

Some may remember the dresser update from spring. I had real trouble then finding new hardware to go with it and settlet with the A and B accompanied by some plain ones. I now found the perfect set from 1 to 6 to replace them with! For the picture I left the A in place to show what it was before the numbers.

London Olympics 2012: Traffic, tickets and security

Suurin jännitykseni ennen matkaa oli liikenne: puhetta oli lakoista ja kauheista ruuhkista johtuen olympialaisrajoituksista ja olympialaisliikenteestä. Joko meillä oli aivan mahdottoman hyvä tuuri tai paikalliset ovat todella muutelleet normaaleja rutiinejaan ja lisätyt palvelut ovat riittäneet, mutta kertaakaan ei kohdallemme osunut mitään poikkeuksellista keskustaliikenteessä, ruuhkaisempia metroja olen nähnyt ihan tavallisina kesäpäivinä.


Before the trip my main concern was the traffic: there were talk of strikes and olympic lanes and terrible traffic jams caused by them. Luckily we ran into nothing like it! I have seen much more crowded tubes on regular summer days than now so either we were really lucky or the locals have changed their routines and the additional arrangements have been enough.

Ylemmän kuvan mukaiset "ruuhkat" tuntuivat tavanomaisemmilta, ainut oikea ruuhka oli olympialaiskylästä ja Westfieldin ostoskeskuksesta poisjohtavalla sillalla, mutta sekin asemaan mennessä jakaantui niin, että asemalla ja metrossa ei enää huomannut ruuhkaa.


We saw more of the above kind, the only real crowd was on the bridge leading away from the Olympic village and Westfield shopping center. 

Toisena lajina, johon saimme liput, oli lentopallo. Vaihdoimme kuitenkin osallistujalistaa, että liput hankkinut siskon mieskin pääsisi jotain katsomaan ja minä jätin lentopallon väliin. Kuten jo edellisessä postauksessa mainitsinkin, lippujen saaminen oli todella vaikeaa. Lippujärjestelmä ongelmineen ja muut lippuongelmat ovatkin ainut negatiivinen sanottava koko kisoista.


The other sport we had tickets to was volleyball. I switched with my brother-in-law so he could go also as he was the one who managed to get the tickets we got, so I did not go. As I mentioned in the previous post, getting tickets was really difficult. The ticket system problems and all ticket related issues are really the only negative I have to say about the games. 

Kolmas paljon julkisuutta saanut asia oli turvallisuus. Sisareni totesikin, että poliiseja, sotilaita ja metrotyöntekijöitä tuntui olevan enemmän kuin kisaturisteja, joten melkoisen turvalliseksi sitä koki olonsa. Kaikki vapaaehtoiset ja edellämainitut olivat hyväntuulisia ja avuliaita, apua sai ennenkuin ehti edes pyytää. Siitä täydet pisteet!


Third issue that was mentioned in the media a lot was the security. As my sister noted, there seemed to be more police, soldiers and tube workers than there were Olympics goers so you felt really safe! All the volunteers and the workers mentioned before were so happy and helpful that you got help before you even knew what you could need it for. For that, 10 points! :)
