Pääsiäiskokolla

Jos tällä kokolla kaikkoa trullit, niin ei millään. Pikainen poikkeaminen äidin helmoissa Pohjanmaalla sisälsi toki kokkokiertueen.

Easter in Pohjanmaa (Ostrobothnia) means bonfires everywhere. Would not want to risk the witches coming for a visit so mom and I went to seek refuge by one.

Pääsiäispupu - Easter BUNny

Leivoin työpaikalle pääsiäisen aloitukseksi pupurahkapullan. Huonostihan tuon kävi.

I baked an Easter BUNny (pun intended) to get the Easter started at work. He did not survive.

Kiirastorstai . Maundy Thursday

Vaikka torstai muuten oli kaikkea muuta kuin valoisa, ainakin Tivoli tarjosi loistetta. 

Käytimme kummipojan ja Stanleyn testaamassa laitteet ja jäätymässä kalikoiksi. Ja tietenkin, hattaralla.

While Thursday in no other way appeared this bright, at least the fair brought some light into it.

We took our godson and Stanley there, to go on a few rides and freeze thoroughly. And obviously, for some cotton candy.

Metsänkylän Navetta

Viime sunnuntaina oli Metsänkylän Navetalla pääsiäismarkkinat ja sain viimein hyvän tekosyyn suunnata tutustumaan! Olen jo pitkään sitä tähtäillyt, mutta jotenkin sunnuntait ovat aina liian vaikeita aikataulullisesti tuolle vierailulle. Nyt oli kuitenkin paljon hyviä syitä :) Markkinakojut olivat ihanan tunnelmallisia ja alpakat seurasivat tarkasti tapahtumia kevyen snackin lomassa.

Last Sunday the Metsänkylän Navetta hosted an Easter Fair so I had a good reason to go see what they are all about. I have been meaning to do so for a while now and finally had a good excuse! I loved the market stalls and the alpacas kept an eye on us.

Markkinat koluttuani kävin ensin Domus Classicassa, erilaisessa rautakaupassa. Aivan ihana kauppa, hyvä etten ostanut hirveitä määriä nauloja ihan vain saadakseni sieltä jotain. Kaikki kauniisti koreissa ja upeassa rakennuksessa.

After I was done at the market I went to see the hardware store they had. How lovely it was, so different from the usual, all laid out so nicely and what a building.

Mutta vasta viimeisessä kohteessani, navetassa, reissusta alkoi tulla kallis. Oh.... Onneksi ostamani ovi mahtui autoon ;) Pikkukuvissa näkyvä sininen ja vihreä ovat oven molemmat puolet. Katsotaan, mitä siitä syntyy.

Only in the last store did it get expensive... Luckily the door (!!) I bought fit in the car! Mine is the blue and green door seen in the small pictures.

Ja toki Stanley ja minä kävimme testaamassa Kahvila Leivintuvan pannukakut.

And of course, Stanley and I had to go check out their famous pancakes!

Aurora Borealis

Jos olisi parempi kuvaaja ja parempi kamera, olisi parempia kuvia. Aika kivoja tuli näilläkin puutteilla huimista ilmiöistä näinkin etelään. 

If only I were better with the camera and had a better one, these would be amazing. A wonderful lightshow anyway to see in Southern Finland.

Maalismarkkinat Fiskarsissa - March Fair at Fiskars

Lauantaiksi oli luvassa loistavaa ilmaa ja meillä ei ollut suurempia suunnitelmia, niin päätimme lähteä ajelemaan Fiskarsin Ruukkiin (kaksipäiväisille...) Maalismarkkinoille. 

Maalismarkkinoilla oli nähtävissä myös jalokivin koristeltu "Suomen kallein suklaamuna", suklaamestari Petri Sirénin ja kultaseppämestari Kristian Saarikorven yhteinen jalokivin koristeltu pääsiäismuna.

On Saturday the forecast was saying lots of sunshine was going to cheer us up so we decided to drive to Fiskars. Fiskars is a small village in Southern Finland that has been the home of the Fiskars Corporation. Fiskars Ironworks was founded in 1649 and has been an important part of the development of the community. Nowadays Fiskars village is known as a center of Finnish art and design.

There was also "the Most Expensive Chocolate Egg in Finland" on show. The egg has been created by chocolatier Petri Sirén and goldsmith Kristian Saarikorpi.     

Kävimme myös Fiskarsin myymälässä näyttämässä Stanleylle, mitä Fiskars nykyisin valmistaa.

We also visited the Fiskars store to see what the company does today and saw lots of different types of gardening tools and scissors, knives... a whole bunch of different tools. Stanley bought something to take home, too. 

Pitihän meidän myös vierailla Petris Chocolate Roomissa, jotta Stanleykin pääsi maistamaan noita herkkuja. 

Of course, we had to visit Petris Chocolate Room so Stanley too could taste their yummy products.

Kevättä oli ilmassa: aurinko lämmitti ja jää suli silmissä... Ihana kevät! Markkinat muuten jatkuvat vielä tänään ja kelihän on aivan yhtä upea kuin eilen? ;)

Spring was in the air: sun shining, ice melting, water gushing... I love spring!

Jäälinna - Ice Castle

Ilmat jäälyhtyjen tekemiseen ovat loistavat! Öisin pakkasta on 20 astetta, joten lyhdyt ehtivät hyvin jäätyä. Ja jollei koko talvena ole vielä ennättänyt lyhdyn jäädytykseen, oli kai jo korkea aika ryhtyä.

The weather is great for making ice lanterns. During the night, the temperature drops below -20 degrees Celsius, so it's plenty for them to freeze during the night.

Joten Stanleyn kanssa veimme kakkuvuoan vedellä täytettynä ulkoilemaan.

So Stanley and I got the cake tin, filled it with water and took it outside.

Helsinki

Tänään Stanley (kanadalainen vieraamme, joka tuli 3 viikoksi kyläilemään palatakseen sitten Corner Brookiin kertomaan koululuokalleen, mitä kaikkea näki ja koki) ja minä menimme junalla Helsinkiin pienelle kaupunkikierrokselle.

Today Stanley and I took the train to Helsinki to do a bit of sightseeing. Helsinki is the capital of Finland and has about 600 000 inhabitants. You can read more about Helsinki here.

Heti aseman vieressä Stanley bongasi luisteluradan ja pakkohan hänen oli käydä kokeilemassa. 

Right next to the railway station in Helsinki, Stanley noticed the skating rink and we just had to stop for a few rounds on skates. Most Finns learn skating in school or even before going to school. 

Kiertueella kävimme tietenkin Senaatintorilla ihailemassa Helsingin tuomiokirkkoa auringonlaskussa.

We went to see the Helsinki Cathedral, which is one of the most noted sights in Helsinki. It get's about half a million visitors yearly. 

About 76 percent (2012) of Finns are Lutheran (Christians).

Seuraavana vuorossa oli tietenkin Presindentinlinna. 

We also saw the President's palace but were not invited in. Next time, maybe! Finland is a republic and the President is the head of State. Currently the Finnish President is called Sauli Niinistö, who became the president a year ago after two terms of Tarja Halonen, who was the first female president in Finland.

Ja riitti meillä onneksi aikaa vielä iltateelle Fazerilla.

And to warm up after we went to Fazer cafe. Fazer is one of the largest manufacturers of candy and famous mainly of their chocolate. I will try my best to fit some samples in my envelope-luggage...

Kirpparikukot - Roosters

Pääsiäinen alkaa kutkuttamaan, kun kirppikseltä lähti mukaani viikonloppuna tällainen Hattula-Nastola-kokoelma. Näissä oli niin mainiot värit, että ei siinä auttanut pyristely!

It's obviously getting close to Easter as I just had to get these last weekend.

Myös tämä ihana kulunut tarjotin tuli mukaan samalla reissulla!

Stanley Arrived in Finland!

Today we welcomed a visitor from Corner Brook in Canada! Stanley Lambchop flew all the way here to see what Finland is like. Stanley's had a little accident earlier and was flattened by a bulletin board that fell on him. Since then, he's had a lot of adventures (so much easier when you're flat as a pancake). Read more about the Flat Stanley.

Stanley was really hungry when he arrived so luckily dinner was ready. He had some potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli with his meatloaf. 

And though our guest house is still under renovation, we had luckily finished the floor so we had a room for him to stay in. Stanley was real tired after all the travel, so he went to bed early.
